Crisis Handling & Suicide Prevention
Safety Plan (and instructions)
In the United States, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death overall, and disproportionately affects ages 10-64.
A written safety plan is a de-escalation tool to help in times of crisis, suicide ideation, and even times when you feel “off” or have out-of-control feelings such as anger or depression.
Even if you don't experience suicidality, going through this process yourself can also guide you later to help another person when they are feeling hopeless or in crisis.
While living in Utah, I attended a few annual community leader summits on suicide prevention, though I was frankly disappointed with the actionable prevention piece (what can I say?). In 2020, I researched best practices and put together this mega template. A few of us (BS, HS, JJ, and me) then worked through this live as a group, and I incorporated a few edits and additions.
The safety plan itself is a one page of clean and simple section blocks. The PDF has an introductory page, the plan template, then a few pages of clear and detailed instructions, with suggestions to help get you going. If you use a screenreader, there is a separate plaintext file of the intro page and instructions.
Prepare this plan for yourself, and encourage others to prepare one as well, even as a group of two or more working individually together! You can also help build community and relationship, and demonstrate compassion, by walking someone else through this process.
